MINING PIPE RACKS

Product:Â Mining Pipe RacksÂ
Application:Â Cowal Gold Mine
Sectors:Â Mining
Location:Â NSW
Forged In Steel fabricated the pipe racks for Evolution Mining’s Cowal Gold Mine in New South Wales, Australia. As its name suggests, the pipe racks support the service pipes that run through the facility.
The pipe rack is 2370x1800mm wide overall and stands 1716mm tall from the top of the steel to the base. The steel members on the top are made with two pairs of 1828mm long 150 universal beam and 1652mm long 150 universal column attached to each other with M16 bolts and nuts. The universal columns have two landing plates each for the stair handrails on the inner side and four cleats to connect to the walkway to the structure on the outer side. The universal beams, on the other hand, have two cleats, also to connect to the walkway on the outer side.
The beam weldment at the top consists of three steel members: one 1500mm long 150 parallel flange channel in the middle, attached perpendicular to the universal beams on either side; and a pair of 76.1×3.6 circular hollow sections extending diagonally from either ends of the universal beam on one side to the centre of the parallel flange channel and universal beam on the other side.
The four columns are 1716mm 150 universal column steels that end with a 172×172 cap plates at the top and 300×300 base plates each. Two sides of the column have three cleats each to hold up the top structure as well as two support beams.
The support beams are 1898mm long 150 universal beams with two 41x21mm Unistrut P1000T attached on the top. Unistrut channels are used to support pipes and conduits. They are known for their strength and versatility, allowing it to carry weight and pressure. The beams are drilled to match the holes of the Unistrut and are attached with M10 washers and bolts. The other two sides of the column have 1500mm long horizonal support beams at the bottom and a pair of cleats to hold the diagonal 76.1×3.6 circular hollow sections.
The materials and workmanship in the fabrication of pipe rack are in accordance with AS 4100, which outlines the requirements for the design and engineering aspects of the fabrication of steelwork in structures, as well as Evolution Mining specifications. All open sections follow AS 3679.1 (requirements for hot rolled structural steel bars and sections) and AS 3678 (requirements for hot rolled structural steel plates and floorplates). The hollow sections follow AS 1163 or the requirements for cold formed, electric resistance welded, steel hollow sections used in structures.
The steel sections used are Grade 300, which are often used in general structural and engineering applications. All the welds are in compliance with AS 1554 or the specifics for the welding of steel structures made with steel plates, sheets, or sections. The welds are 6mm continuous fillet weld and full penetration butt welds where applicable. All weld splatter, butts, and sharp edges are removed.
Non destructive testing of welds is conducted, including 100% visual test and 10% magnetic particle inspection (MPI). The steel sections are treated with paint and protective coatings to engineering specifications.
Forged In Steel is certified to ISO 9001 standards.
